description: the pendant in this necklace is in the shape of a stylized maori fish hook known as a hei-matau (pronounced hay-may-tow) -- the maori word for hook -- & is made of greenstone, or new zealand nephrite jade. this particular variety of greenstone is called kawakawa, named so for its strong green colour resembling a kawakawa (lofty pepper tree) leaf. early maori used greenstone to make adzes, chisels, and other cutting tools.
it is believed that the hei-matau amulets were worn as talismans during fishing expeditions, to bring good luck, good health, & provide a safe journey over water. It also represents strength, determination, peace & prosperity.
